Marie Laverne (Van Loenen) Hogan, daughter of Jake and Bertha (Lokhorst) Van Loenen, was born July 28, 1925 in Prairie View Kansas and passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Advocate Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, IL, at the age of 92.

Marie was born and raised near Prairie View, KS and graduated from Prairie View High School in 1942 at the age of 16. She moved to Denver, CO and worked as a secretary for a Denver area company. She returned to Prairie View, and in 1946 married Wilmer Hogan. After earning a degree in education, she taught in area schools for several years. Marie and Wilmer made their residence in Prairie View and had sons Leon in 1950 and Lauren in 1952. Marie put her teaching career on hold to raise her sons but in the early 1960s went back to Ft Hays State Teachers College part time and ultimately earned an advanced degree in Special Education. She became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society in the teaching field. She went on to teach Special Education in several area schools, including Prairie View, Logan, Almena, and Long Island until her retirement in 1987. Marie was a committed educator who enriched the lives of those she taught, and she truly enjoyed her students.

Marie had many non-work interests throughout her life. She enjoyed travel and there were memorable family trips to Disneyland, the Black Hills, the East Coast, Arizona, Mexico, and of course, the Colorado Rocky Mountains. After retirement Marie and Wilmer enjoyed trips to Europe (including a dedicated trip to Holland to meet relatives), Alaska, and Hawaii among others. Marie was a member of the Sunshine Leaders EHU and was heavily involved in the creation of the town park and library. She took up genealogy and traced the family back to the 1600s. She was the author and editor of the book “Prairie View, The First 100 Years”, a history of the town created for its centennial. She joined Wilmer on the senior trapshooting circuit in Arizona and established a wide circle of friendships over the years. Marie and Wilmer moved to Lincolnshire, IL in 2008 and enjoyed being close to their family, especially their grandchildren.

Marie is pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 68 years Wilmer in 2014, and daughter-in-law Joyce (Wodlinger) Hogan in 2017. She is survived by sons Leon and Linda (Callahan) Hogan of Annandale, NJ and Lauren Hogan of Northbrook, IL, her grandchildren Brett and Andrea (Koehler) Hogan of Northbrook IL, and Samantha Hogan of Clarksville, TN, and her twin great-grandsons Wesley and Spencer Hogan of Northbrook IL. She is also survived by a brother, James and Barbara (Stewart) Van Loenen of Madison, WI, a sister, Bette and Clarence Tien of Prairie View, KS, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her family and those who’s lives she touched.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 10:30 a.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church in Phillips County, with Pastor Aaron Rust officiating. Burial will follow in the Prairie View Cemetery, Prairie View.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 16, from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with the family greeting friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, or the Rehoboth Christian School.
