JV Panthers finish 5th at Hill City tourney

Eight regional high schools faced off Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the annual Joe Green JV Basketball Tournament held in Hill City. The JV Panthers saw plenty of action, placing a formidable 5th in the tournament.

The Panthers, led by Coach Nathan Strasburg, matched up against the Stockton Tigers on Thursday in a less than stellar showing, falling 42-12 and forcing the Panthers to the bottom side of the bracket. Leading the Panther offense was freshman Kagan Keeten scoring 5, 3 from the line. Freshmen Ethan Leidig and Jack Molzahn joined sophomore Trent Herrick sinking 2 points each. Sophomore Tyler Martin finished off the night landing a basket on a Tiger foul.

The court heated up for the Panthers against Ness City on Friday with a solid win, 46-40. Again, Kagan Keeten lead his team in scoring with 15 points, Tyler Martin shooting 9, followed by Trent Herrick with 8, sophomore Parker Dibble with 7, and freshman John Boeve with 6. Rounding out the pack was freshman Nathaniel Huntley with 3.

Herrick led the team with 12 rebounds splitting with 6 offensive and 6 defensive grabs. Dibble gave a solid performance with 9 rebounds on the night.

The first half was a battle of offenses with the Panthers outshooting Ness City 14-7 in the first quarter, but falling 2 points short in the second quarter 7-9. However, the Panthers lead at the half 21-16. The second half opened with a Panther run, outshooting Ness City 14-10. However, fouls began to plague the Panthers with Ness City scoring all but 2 of their 10 points from the foul line. Ness City stepped up the pace during the fourth quarter outscoring the Panthers 14-11.

Saturday, led by Coach Jaron Kellerman, the Panthers matched up against a solid Russell team. The first half turned into a shooting showdown with the Panthers leading at the half by 3. The Broncos came back out and trounced the Panthers in the third quarter outshooting them by 10, 15-5. Persevering, the Panther offense reversed the course of the game by outscoring the Broncos by 10 in the fourth quarter 17-7. The Panther offense hit 28 percent of their 3-point attempts on the night, with John Boeve sinking 2 and Martin, Keeten and Dibble each landing one. The trio of Martin, Herrick and Dibble anchored a solid defensive showing with each claiming 5 defensive rebounds, 15 of the team’s total of 21.

The JV Panthers will face off against Plainville this Friday night, January 5th, at home with tip-off at 4:30. Varsity will tip-off at 7:30.
