Jolene Wennekamp Nikl, 61, of Ankeny, IA was killed last Thursday in an automobile accident that occurred on US 183 approximately seven miles south of Alma, NE. According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Mrs. Nikl, was driving a 2012 Hyundai Elantra eastbound, pulled to the right shoulder and attempted to execute a U-turn when the vehicle was struck broadside by a 2001 Freightliner, also east bound, driven by Georbis Santa Montengro, 42, of Houston, TX. Montengro was not injured. Aymara Rodriguez, a passenger in the Freightliner, was transported to Harlan County Health Systems in Alma, NE. Larry D. Nikl, 69, a passenger in the Hyundai, was critically injured and transported to CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney, NE. A second passenger, Kristina Nikl, 26, transported to Harlan County Health Systems.
The Phillips County Sheriff’s Department, initially, responded to the accident which occurred at approximately 10:30AM, December 21st. The Kansas Highway Patrol was the investigative agency. Other agencies assisting were the Harlan County Sheriff’s Department, Harlan County Fire Department and EMS, Phillips County Rural Fire Department and the Nebraska State Patrol.
