Northern Valley Huskies devour the Alma Cardinals

Coming off a narrow loss to Logan in mid-December, the Almena Huskies returned to the court to take on the Alma Cardinals in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.

The Husky JV took the court first led by Coach Chuck Fessenden. The JV Huskies proved a formidable opponent for the Alma team defeating them handily, 37-25. Sophomore Fabian Loya led the scoring for the Huskies with a total of 12 points.

The varsity matchup between the two rivals evidenced an impressive performance by the Northern Valley Huskies. Taking the lead early in the game, the breakout second quarter firmly established the shooting consistency and determination of the Husky offense.

Coach Fessenden commented, “Not playing for over two weeks hurt us a little early in the game as we got off to kind of a slow start. Once we got use to the speed of the game we were fine. I was pleased with our defense as we held Alma to 45 points. We were able to rest and recover over the Christmas break, which helped our shooting.”

Three Huskies hit double digits: junior Ross Cole with 16 points; junior Riley Sides with 13; and senior Caden Kinderknecht with 12. Cole hit a total of four 3-pointers with 7 attempts while the team hit 78 percent of their attempts from the line.

While both teams’ shooting percentages were tight, 43 percent for Alma and 45 percent for NV, the Huskies defense held the attempts allowed from the field by the Cardinals. Cole, Sides, and Loya led the team in rebounds with 31 on the night compared to Alma’s total of 19.

Overall on the year, the Huskies are 6-1, 1-1 in district play.
