PHS boys' track team finishes third at Smith Center

On April 15th, the Phillipsburg boys track team had another successful day in Smith Center with the team placing 3rd out of 13.

Beginning with field events, javelin had 3 PRs, starting with sophomore Zane Shields at 147-3 feet getting himself an 8th place finish. Junior Blake Buresh had a massive PR by 6 inches with a distance of 154-10 feet and earned 5th overall. And finally with a throw only 1 inch off the school record, senior Kayden Hudson threw 193-10 feet getting 2nd place.

Shot put also contained 2 PRs from senior Kyron Hughes and junior Blayze Christy. Hughes took a 7th place finish with a throw of 41-11.25 feet and got an 11th place finish, and Christy threw a foot further from his last PR with a distance of 38-9.75 feet. Christy also had a good day at discus with a throw of 127-8 feet, gaining 2 feet from his last PR and finishing 10th.

Junior Cleveland Corman had a field day in both high jump and pole vault placing 5th in high jump with a PR of 5’6. He came in 4th at pole vault clearing a height of 11 feet. Also competing in high jump were sophomore Eli Springer coming in 8th with a height of 5’6 and freshman Riot Rodriguez finishing 11th and clearing 5’2.

Earning a first place finish in long jump, junior Tanner Horinek jumped 20 feet and not far behind was junior Ej Hall placing 3rd with a distance of 19-1.75 feet. Also placing in triple jump, Hall finished 6th at 38-0.25 feet.

Running events began with prelims, and senior Alex VanAllen was able to place in the top 8 to make it to finals in the 100 and 200. He ran the 100 prelims in 12.07 gaining himself a top 5 spot and came out with a sprint of 12.01 during finals with a 4th place finish overall. VanAllen also earned himself an 8th place finish during the 200 finals and a 3rd place finish with a time of 54.61 during the open 400.

Putting in the distance, freshman Brayden King ran both the 1 and 2 mile with ambition and finishing times of 7:24 and 15:33.

Junior Tanner Horinek, the only team hurdler for the boys, achieved 1st place in both 110 prelims and finals with a PR of 15.30. Horinek also participated in the 300 meter hurdles and got himself another 1st place win with a time of 41.31.

Entering two 4x1 teams at this meet, the varsity relay took 2nd with a time of 45.67 and running that race were juniors Tanner Horinek, Ej Hall, Colin Springer, and senior Alex VanAllen. The other 4x1 team competing for the weightmans relay, consisted of junior throwers Blake Buresh, Blayze Christy, sophomore Zane Shields, and freshman Ty Horinek. The weightmans team was able to pull out a 5th place finish with a time of 53.30.
