As the forensics season heads into its final month, the Phillipsburg High School team competed in its last regular season tournament on Thursday in Oberlin. The Panthers claimed the tournament championship and earned twenty medals in a variety of events.

Gold medal winners included Jhett Johnson in prose and humorous solo; Lydia Walker in impromptu; and Hallie Jerby in oration.

Those earning silver medals were Hallie Jerby in impromptu; Lydia Walker in humorous solo; and James Kraushaar in oration.

The following brought home the bronze: Zari Christy in oration; Kadence Grote in humorous solo; James Kraushaar in informative; Jerby and Walker in duet acting; and Kraushaar and Johnson in IDA.

Finishing in fourth place was Emmitt Patterson-Smith in extemporaneous.

Fifth place finishers were Michael VanDerVeen in extemporaneous; Kadence Grote in oration; and Hallie Jerby in humorous solo.

Sixth place medalists were Savannah Bretton in extemporaneous and oration; Emmitt Patterson-Smith in humorous solo; and William Jessup and Waylon Wood in IDA.

“We’ve finished second place in seven of our tournaments this year, so it’s fun to end the regular season with a first place trophy,” Coach Kim Pakkebier said. “We also qualified some new entries for State, so that is encouraging, too.”

Some members of the squad who haven’t yet qualified for State competition will compete again next Wednesday in a last-chance qualifier tournament at Western Plains.

Phillipsburg’s top State-qualified entries will perform for the public on Tuesday, April 29th, at 7pm at the Phillipsburg High School cafeteria for this year’s forensics showcase. All are welcome and the admission is free.

On Saturday, May 3rd, the team will compete in the 2A KSHSAA Speech and Drama Championship held this year in Marion, Kansas.
